Geekilly Happy....! /123

Hehe!!!

Having fun now!

Playing with my Linux machine at long last :-)

The machine was in a state before it died, so it needs sorting properly... I think I'll probably just wipe it and start over with a better disk layout....

Anyway, I'm playing with the hardware first...

The new motherboard is in and working a dream... one of the easiest motherboard installs I think I've ever done... everything matched up nicely, all the bits went in right, the board doesn't flex to much when you press cards into slots... all in all very impressed.

The two power-supplies in the case are happy enough, although psu0 is a little tempremental... it doesn't like powering up immediately after it's been powered down... I think I may look into getting hold of a replacement for it at some point soon. psu1 (the one I added cause I was sucking too much juice from the single original one) is fine and happy :-)

This machine is definitely my favourite... a full tower AT case, now with two power supplies, feeding three internal HDDs, a CDD, a 3½" FDD and a 5¼" FDD, with an external PPA ZIP Drive and an external SCSI HDD... One day it may also get an internal DLT drive, but that's for the future when i'm a bit richer than I am now....

Anyway...

I now have my 5¼" floppy drive hooked up and working! And yes, I *know* it's a touch sad, and it's *old* hardware... but I just love having it hooked up and usable... it's a 1.2Mb drive, so it's not too bad capacity wise (although I may have fun finding some new blank disks for it...), it's faster than any 1.44Mb drive I've ever used and it's really *solid*... yes, I *know* SOG... Sad Old Geek..!

I also have SCSI up, so the external disk and the ZIP drive are mounting properly.

The networking shouldn't be as hard to get up as I expected... I've got a new card, but apparently the chip has been supported for a long time, so that should be ok... an rtl8139 if you're interested, on an SMC 1244TX card......

OK, scrap that idea... it's not insmodding the rtl's kernel module... *not* good... I can't be bothered playing with it to any great degree, I'll probably scrap the whole system fairly soon at start over...

But that's all for tomorrow.. and I have a Win2K box to do for a friend tomorrow too...

I'm gonna clear the crap off my bed and go to sleep...

Bye y'all
